Echinacea 'Sundown' (section) Watercolour on paper

With the colour reminiscent of a vintage ballgown, this was my favourite Echinacea of my @the_rhs Silver-Gilt series to paint. From soft violet to warm orange, peach and rosy tones, the drooping, quietly decaying petals have a sense of retiring glamour.

As winter fires warm our homes with their glowing embers, the reminder of autumn splendour is never far away. Until next year, Sundown.

So far, a couple of buds and a half hidden bloom are near completion. Next is a full facing open rose and a few more buds.

I'm going to need loads of pink for this one. As a progress record I like to take daily photos. That way I can see what needs adjusting and how the painting is shaping up.

As they are to hang side by side, I painted them left and right facing. The client really liked that idea. These two are sisters, not twins.
